In your opinion, how can I keep my child from using drugs?
Never shy away from the issue. Talk to your child early on about the risks associated with drug abuse, and make sure they know what to do in case they are ever approached by someone who offers them drugs. Set a specific time and date to talk to your child, and try your best to stick to it. Also, make sure you don't push your kids away by being overly aggressive. This can be tough to do given the situation, but try your best to remain calm. Visit www.AddictionIsReal.org for more help on how to begin these conversations with your child.

What should I do if I suspect my child is using drugs?

Don't wait to intervene. Talk to your child about your suspicions. Educate yourself on the issue and try to be firm, yet loving. Try your best not to escalate the situation or force your child into a corner, possibly grant them a one-time pass if they come clean. Give them a chance to be honest with you. Show them that you can be trusted with the information, but make sure they know where you stand on the issue. Keep the lines of communication open by any means necessary.
